June 14, 2008 - The importance of SAVING My Money
We live in Manhattan, noted as THE most expensive city in the USA. It's rough trying to keep a balance between spending what money we have on enjoying life in the city and putting money away for a rainy day (or year, in our case). A couple of months ago I decided, with El's suggestion, to open a savings account that was not affiliated with my checking bank. Why? I'll tell you. I do all of my banking online and when I can easily transfer money back and forth between accounts, the savings account seems to never have anything in it... So I decided to split up my funds and keep myself from constantly digging into the treats bowl. Since that day I have not withdrawn on my savings once and I'm even earning interest! My money is growing on its own! Of course, I put in a certain amount on a weekly basis, automatically, as well. This was an incredibly smart idea.
Keep in mind, I don't have a whole lot of disposable income to be hiding in a shoebox for the next two years. Like I said, NYC is expensive! My rent is enough to make me cringe every time I write the check, and I'm too embarrassed to tell non-New Yorkers what we pay. They just wouldn't understand. Which is why I freelance on the side and have starting funneling all of that income straight into the savings account. It's not much, but hopefully in two years it'll be what we need to make us comfortable enough to consider leaving the financial security of our 9-5ers.
And! Here it is! The plug! As I am a web designer/developer, of course that's also what my moonlighting job is. If you've come across this page this early in the game, chances are you probably actually know one of us. Consider this your opportunity to do something nice for someone you love! Let me build you a website! All proceeds will go toward our chance at traveling the world and you can feel better that you've helped to supply two people with a valuable life education in culture! If you are interested in pursuing this lifelong goal of yours, please shoot me an email and we'll talk.
