June 13, 2008 - It's Official. Sort of.
So, I said yesterday that this whole Travel Year thing seems pretty unrealistic. I mean, it's not like we're going to ever save up enough money to go, right? It's not like either of us will ever get up the courage to quit our jobs and ditch financial and moral security for a life on the road, right? Well, maybe not. Maybe by writing it down, making it an actual plan, telling people about, maybe then it'll stick. So I'm building a website, no better place to tell the world about your plans then on the www.
This will also give us something to do together, as a couple that is. Working in the real world gets mundane. You get up, go to work, work, come home, sit on the couch in front of your energy-sucking 52-inch flatscreen for a couple hours, go to bed. Life has to be more than that. For now, we can at least break up the monotony and start planning and document that addition to our life. SO, here it is!
Whilst in pre-planning mode for the Travel Year, we are also now planning our trip to Thailand for November. We managed to get our flights booked already, thanks to El's frequent flier points. we're leaving October 31st, returning on November 18. So far we've decided on 3 major points -- beach (which island, we have yet to decide, suggestions?), Chiang Mai for treks and a day volunteering at the Elephant Nature Park, and ending in Bangkok for some serious shopping and bug-eating on Ko Sarn Road. There is also the possible addition of a quick trip across the Cambodian border to check out Angkor Wat.
Elliot is our official travel planner. He's the one who obsesses about scheduling, prices, etc. and books everything himself. This makes my life so much easier, so I suppose it's only natural that I absorb the responsibility of keeping the website up and running. We're big fans of Lonely Planet and Trip Advisor and spend a lot of time reading the forums for ideas and suggestions. But even sites like the one we're trying to create here are helpful, one of our biggest inspirations was The Travel Year.
